How to Build a Great Team
Published
“Teamwork makes the dream work.” Yes, it’s cheesy, but in order to get anything worthwhile done, it often takes a group of people with a like-minded goal. Yes, that’s a TEAM! Your goal is to create the best team imaginable and fight Alzheimer’s disease on The Longest Day. So how do you do that? Here are three tips to help you create the BEST TEAM EVER!
Ask your BFF!
If you haven’t already, now is the time to start asking people to join your team. Your best friend who you can always count on for a good time? Ask her. Your workmate that you spend every lunch hour with? Ask him. Your boss, your cousin, your partner, your jogging buddy, your yoga instructor, all the people that you interact with day in and day out… ask them to join your team.
How will you ask them? Tell them why you chose to participate in The Longest Day. Tell them your personal story. Let them know why it matters to you. Tell them that an estimated 47 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including over 5 million Americans. Tell them that Alzheimer’s disease cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. But there is hope. You are that hope!
Tell them that in order to raise awareness and honor people facing Alzheimer’s you are going to do something really cool for The Longest Day! The people you love and who love you right back will join you — but you’ve got to ask!
You have an e-mail in your Participant Center with some suggested messaging you can use to recruit a team. Send it out now!
Kick it off with a Purple Party!
Now it’s time to play party host. The best way to kick off anything fun is with a party. Schedule some time to have a kickoff! Post an invitation to your Purple Party on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest. Don’t forget to include time, date and location — and that dessert will be provided!

This is the perfect opportunity to take a team picture and post it on your The Longest Day web page. When people see and share the pictures from your party, more folks will join your team and support your efforts.
Check out The Longest Day Shop for some cool gear that you can use at your kickoff party.
Keep getting together!
In order to keep your team excited about The Longest Day, keep talking about it. If your team is local, then get together every other week to plan and share fundraising ideas. Let everyone know who the number one fundraiser is on your team and give them a round of applause! Share ideas on how to ask friends and family for their support and start hashing out the details for your Longest Day event. If you have an Anywhere Team (a team with members from across the country or the world), you can do the same by sending out an e-mail to the entire team once a week or scheduling a call on Skype or a Google Hangout. Your team will follow your lead; the more enthusiastic you are, the more excited they’ll be!
Remind your team that after February 29, the registration fee goes up to $20, so it’s important to sign up now to get the Early Bird registration discount.
Check out the “Get Social” section in your Participant Center for more info on how you can spread the word about your efforts.
Thank you so much for all you do in the fight against Alzheimer’s and to support those facing the disease and their families.
